Looking for a Family Law Attorney?
A divorce or child custody matter can be one of the most important times in your life. It can also be one of the hardest. In this trying time in your life, you will need a family law attorney you can trust and depend on to help you through this stressful process.
First thing to look for when meeting with an attorney for a consultation is to make sure they mainly practice family law. Some attorneys dabble in different areas of law that limits their focus to new case law and updates on family law rules. They may have the basic knowledge of the law, but may not know the intricacies of family law or have the experience in family court that is necessary for adequate representation.
Another thing you should do when looking for a famiily law attorney is make sure that you are meeting with the attorney that you would be working with on your case. I have had several clients tell me that when they went for a consultation at a different firm, they were told that an attorney would be assigned to their case upon hiring. This could cause potential problems in the future. You want to make sure that you have a good relationship with your attorney, as you will be working with them for several months.
It is critical to meet the attorney face to face at your initial consultation or at least at some point prior to hiring them. This will allow you the opportunity to determine the type of representation you will have. I had a client go to a consultation with another family law attorney who had their back to the client the entire time while typing on the computer. This will make you feel unimportant which could be an indicator of how your case will be treated.
A family law attorney should explain the law to you and how it relates to your case. The attorney should provide their opinion based on the law and your unique set of circumstances what the likely outcome would be. The attorney should never guarantee any outcome as this will lead to serious disappointment if it does not turn out that way.
